The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) is a sport utility vehicle developed by American Motors Corporation (AMC). It launched in the US in 1983 as model year 1984. It was AMC’s first all-new design since the 1963 SJ Wagoneer.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
It is a front-engine, rear- or four-wheel drive vehicle with two- or four-door bodywork. It seats five. Its unibody construction integrates body and frame into one structure.
What it gets right
It preserves the rugged, utilitarian character of earlier Jeeps while shrinking the package. It looks like something you’d take into the rough country — and it did.
