The Jeep CJ began as a 1944 Willys-Overland prototype, a civilian version of the wartime Jeep, and the 1945 Universal Jeep became the first mass-produced civilian four-wheel-drive car. Through the CJ-2A, CJ-3B, CJ-5 and CJ-7 it kept a separate body and frame and live axles, and with few exceptions part-time four-wheel drive. More than 1.5 million were built before the Wrangler replaced it.
