What the car is and where it came from
The Fiat X1/9 is an Italian two-seater mid-engined sports car. It was developed from the 1969 Autobianchi A112 Runabout concept. Marcello Gandini designed it at Bertone. It retained its prototype code — X1/9 — as its marketing name.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
The X1/9 places the Fiat 128’s transverse engine and gearbox directly behind the seats, in front of the rear axle. This mid-mounted layout gives rear-wheel drive and a compact, balanced chassis. The removable targa top stows under the bonnet. The monocoque body is built at Bertone’s Grugliasco factory, then assembled at Fiat’s Lingotto plant.
What it gets right
It gets right the integration of mechanism and form: the targa panel, retractable headlights, front and rear storage, and wedge profile all serve function before flair. Its architecture-first approach delivers usable space, visibility, and service access within tight cost and tooling limits.
What it does not
It does not isolate the driver from road noise or suspension intrusion. It does not offer adjustable suspension, power steering or anti-lock brakes. It does not decouple styling from mechanical packaging — every line follows the transverse drivetrain’s footprint.
What it changed
It proved a production mid-engined layout could be derived from a front-wheel-drive donor without bespoke architecture. It shifted Fiat’s design process: the X1/9 was the first Fiat conceived from the start to meet US safety regulations.
