What the car is and where it came from
A Group 4 Sports Car announced by Porsche in January 1966. Mid-engined. Flat-six powered. Developed under Ferdinand Piëch’s leadership of Porsche’s development department from 1965.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
The driver sits low, feet forward, engine mid-ship behind the cockpit. Gull-wing doors lift vertically. The plexiglas engine cover gives direct sight of the flat-six. Wind-tunnel shaping cuts drag without active aero or complex ducting.
What it gets right
It gets weight distribution right: 580 kg total, 250 lbs lighter than the 904. It gets airflow right: 280 km/h top speed at Le Mans with a 2-litre engine. It gets homologation right: 65 units built, certified in May 1966.
What it does not
It does not offer driver aids, adjustable suspension, or multiple driving modes. It has no rear visibility through the plexiglas. Its gull-wing doors demand space to open. It was never built for road comfort or daily use.
What it changed
It proved wind-tunnel testing was non-negotiable for high-speed sports car design. It set the template for Porsche’s next-generation prototypes: mid-engined, minimal, aerodynamically resolved.
