What the car is and where it came from

The Land Rover Series I is a compact British off-road vehicle conceived by Maurice Wilks in 1947, inspired by his use of a Willys Jeep on his Anglesey farm. A prototype was built on a Jeep chassis in summer 1947. Fifty pre-production models were authorised in September 1947. It launched at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show.

It uses leaf-spring suspension and selectable two- or four-wheel drive — except early Series I models (1948–mid-1951), which had constant four-wheel drive via a freewheel mechanism. The body is bolted to a fully box-welded frame. The aluminium alloy body does not rust.
