Land Rover Defender

Land Rover · 1990

The Defender is a British off-road vehicle lineage developed in the 1980s from the original Land Rover series launched in April 1948. It was initially sold as the Land Rover One Ten (1983), Land Rover Ninety (1984), and Land Rover One Two Seven (1985), before being renamed Defender 90/110/130 in 1990 following the Discovery's introduction. It features four-wheel drive, a steel ladder chassis, aluminium alloy bodywork, coil springs front and rear, and permanent four-wheel drive enabled by a centre differential in the transfer case. It gained a worldwide reputation for ruggedness and versatility.

Land Rover series

Maurice Wilks · 1948

The Land Rover Series I is a utilitarian off-road vehicle born from Maurice Wilks’s farm needs in 1947. It introduced mass-produced civilian four-wheel drive with doors and a hard roof. Its box-welded frame and aluminium body prioritised longevity over comfort. It changed expectations of what a post-war utility vehicle could be — and remains defined by what it refused to become.
