A British-built roadster made by AC Cars from 1962 to 1967, developed from the AC Ace with extensive front-end rework to accept Ford V8 engines. Born from a 1961 collaboration with Carroll Shelby, it was produced intermittently in the UK and later the US.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
It places a Ford V8 engine into a lightweight British roadster chassis. The driver sits low, close to the axle line, with direct steering and minimal suspension travel. Front suspension uses transverse leaf springs acting as upper links; rear uses a Salisbury 4HU differential with inboard disc brakes. Power flows through a four-speed manual gearbox to rear wheels.
What it gets right
It gets right the balance of light weight and brute torque. It gets right the integration of inboard rear brakes to reduce unsprung mass. It gets right the evolution from Ace-derived simplicity to Mk III’s reinforced 4-inch-tube chassis — a direct answer to the 390 V8’s undriveability.
What it does not
It does not isolate the driver from mechanical feedback. It does not offer progressive throttle response at low rpm. It does not accommodate luggage, comfort or visibility beyond the front axle. It does not decouple power delivery from chassis flex — especially in early Mk I models.

It proved a small-volume British manufacturer could build a world-beating sports car by integrating an off-the-shelf V8. It pushed AC to abandon leaf springs for coil-sprung, cross-braced chassis architecture.
