Oldsmobile Toronado

David North · 1966

The Oldsmobile Toronado is a personal luxury car produced from 1966 to 1992. It was the first U.S.-built front-wheel drive automobile since 1937. It originated as a 1962 design painting by David North and evolved from a non-production compact concept into a full-size personal luxury coupe built on GM’s E platform. Its defining engineering feature was the Unitized Power Package (UPP), integrating a large V8 and transaxle into a compact front-wheel drive layout. The first-generation model used a 425 cu in (7 L) Super Rocket V8.
